Located at Saint Louis in Alsace, in 2004 the former distillery of the famous bitter herb liqueur “Fernet Branca” became a leading contemporary art centre in the tri-national cultural network created around Basel in the heart of this symbolic triangle between France, Switzerland and Germany. Organized by the ADIAF on the invitation of its Director Pierre-Jean Sugier, the Fondation Fernet-Branca is hosting the first exhibition dedicated to the women artists honoured by the Marcel Duchamp Prize who have responded to the enthusiastic project imagined by the young curator Alicia Knock.

Belgium is frequently regarded as an Eldorado because of its strong concentration of collectors who very often have shown their commitment to contemporary art through the many initiatives they have taken in the public sphere: opening of exhibition places, a policy of supporting the production of works, etc.
For several few years, there has been a tremendous evolution in France’s contemporary art scene. After being almost exclusively dominated by the public sector (Frac, art centres, museums), the last ten years have seen a noticeable increase in the number of initiatives taken by private collectors whose role in the art world is becoming more and more recognized.

The purpose of this day of discussion and reflection is to take a look at these two contexts with different analyses and the exchange of experiences. The talks are organized in round tables, conducted in the morning by Jean-Marie Wynants and in the afternoon by Henri-François Debailleux, both of them journalists.

Latifa Echakhch has devised a specific project for the Centre Pompidou, which follows on from other exhibitions: «Latifa Echakhch. Goodbye Horses» at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 2011, «The scene takes place» at the Eva Presenhuber Gallery in 2013, and «All around fades to a heavy sound» at the kamel mennour gallery this year. In all these exhibitions, Latifa Echakhch explored an idea where circuses and shows become ghostly spectacles emptied of public and performers following «nobody knows» what kind of events or disasters.
With Espace 315, the artist once more places ideas about the stage, decorum and traces at the heart of her approach. The exhibition, consisting of several sculptural components, has a strongly unified feel. The artist seeks to build up a dramatic scene. By making play with the backstage area, the whole work suggests a wide range of meanings an d’interpretations ranging from a disappointing materiality to images of mental landscapes. Latifa Echakhch transforms the venue into a dense, dreamlike place halfway between earth and sky, frozen in a twilight world.
As they move around, visitors discover different fragments of history, objects that are almost derisory, and recollections of childhood drawn from the very depths of memory, then immersed in black ink.
