David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin live and work in Paris and Luxembourg. The two artists began their collaboration in 2006, following their meeting at the MUDAM in Luxembourg. Together, they have developed a distinctive body of work (installations, object-sculptures, videos, performances, photographs), in which the human element is the primary material and encounter the driving force. Drawing on real, and often complex, situations, they give form to experiences of time, duration, and waiting, in direct engagement with the materiality of a territory and its boundaries, particularly in contexts of confinement. Attentive to the margins rather than the center, the artists explore the blurred interstices where society confines those it marginalizes or renders invisible.
Through both its methods and its final forms, concise and pared down, this work is rooted in a lineage stemming from conceptual art, yet it is above all grounded in an exceptional capacity for attention and empathy toward the individuals and social situations encountered. Emerging from a long creative process that combines social analysis, research, and field immersion, their artistic practice relies on observation, dialogue, and co-construction with those concerned. Their ability to refract and poetically transform reality, by combining facts, objects, anecdotes, and symbolic elements, gives rise to a polysemic body of work that leaves a lasting impression on the viewer, who is invited to grasp what lies or resonates beneath the apparent order of the visible.
Their works are included in several public collections: Centre Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris / MUCEM, Marseille / The Israel Museum, Jerusalem / MAC VAL, Val-de-Marne / MUDAM Collection, Luxembourg / BPS22, Belgium / CNAP, France / MAC’S Grand-Hornu, Belgium / FRAC Île-de-France, FRAC Alsace, FRAC Poitou-Charentes, and FRAC Lorraine, France.
