Josèfa Ntjam is an artist, performer, and writer whose practice combines sculpture, photomontage, film, and sound. Drawing the raw material of her work from the internet, natural science books, and photographic archives, Ntjam uses the method of assemblage, of images, words, sounds, and stories, to deconstruct hegemonic narratives surrounding notions of origin and identity. Her work weaves together multiple narratives drawn from investigations into historical events or scientific discoveries, which she confronts with references to African mythology and science fiction. These seemingly heterogeneous discourses and iconographies are brought together in an effort to reclaim History, which Ntjam engages with through narrative constructions exploring future temporalities “in-between worlds” where systems of perception and the naming of fixed entities are subverted.
Ntjam’s solo and duo exhibitions include Institut d’art contemporain – IAC Villeurbanne, FR (2025-26); swell of spæc(i)es, 60th Venice Biennale, Accademia di Belle Arti, IT (2024); Fondation Pernod Ricard, Paris, FR (2023-24); The Photographers’ Gallery, London, UK (2022); FACT, Liverpool, UK (2022).
